Hi Phil,
Sorry to hear about your iMac. When you say the fan has been running more 
often than usual, are these short bursts or is the fan continuously on 
high. I have a 2009 21.5" iMac which has been running the fan at high in 
short bursts. I have been told by my local authorised apple retailer that 
is likely the logic board is getting warm and this is the most energy 
efficient way of the computer cooling it down

They informed me that programs such as Adobe Photoshop, iMovie/ Final Cut 
Pro and iPhoto could cause this. Having not opened those programs for a few 
days all appears to know be running fine.
