Thanks for going to all the trouble. I actually meant to send that to Mac users 
at ucl (auto-complete must have got in there). 

Consulting the local support is like asking someone on a bus at random. I've 
done the stuff you suggested - rebuilding disk permissions seemed to make a 
difference but tomorrow I'll also go in armed with disk warrior...
