Following advice from Smuggers I plucked up courage and bought an iPad Air. It arrived on Monday and until Friday nothing worked and I was pulling my hair out. It should all be so simple : put in your Apple ID and leave iCloud to do the rest. But the iPad would not connect to the internet, didn't seem to like our network, so on advice of Apple store I changed the settings on our router. Great mistake. After this the wifi speed went down to snail's pace, so slow none of us could download anything and iCloud still couldn't work. Our provider (utility warehouse) advised me to change the settings - this was Wednesday - still very very slow. Called provider again on Friday. This time I got a very bright bloke who changed every setting -at least that's how it seemed to me - and the joy of speed right up where it should be. What a relief! This weekend is the first opportunity to get to know the new iPad. Yes, as Smuggers advised, it is an improvement on older models : lighter, better connectivity, and longer battery life. But why oh why the wifi problems at the beginning? It has been a horrible week.
