There's a reed-switch inside the port that detects optical audio connectors and
shuts off the analog audio systems. If that reed-switch gets stuck, as it often
does with the older models, then it restricts the laptop to optical connections
only. Your most reliable bet, if compressed air doesn't work, is to get a USB
to audio adapter and run the sound through that.
Unfortunately the connector port is soldered onto the motherboard, so
replacement is extremely expensive.
