Virginia,

According to a speed check on postcode TN31 6, the advertised maximum
available speed you could achieve is 16mbps although the realistic maximum
that should be achievable is 2.4 - 8mbps. This is all dependant on
distance from your local 'green box' and how far it is from the exchange,
quality of the line connecting your premises to the local green box,
quality of your internal wiring and connection of your router to the
telephone system; is it connected to the primary socket? Do you have ADSL
Microfilters connected to EVERY telephone socket that has a device plugged
into it Sky Box, Telephones, Extensions, central heating oil senders etc.
etc.

If you can answer yes to all of these questions, there's very little that
can be done to improve the service you receive through your telephone line
but there are alternatives. Take a look at
http://www.ruralbroadband.co.uk/tooway-20 - if you have nearby neighbours
who also use the internet but are disappointed by the experience, the
installation and ongoing cost can be shared.
