the really really really honest response is to shrug and think 'when will people learn?'

the helpful response is to go into the user library after googling where Mail keeps the emails and see if anything is there. It is odd to have lost them all, I suspect they are all there. Also try searching for specific messages via searchlight, it might prompt some activity/discovery.

Another one is to download Mailsmith and see if that imports things Mail has lost track of but are still on the disk, keep it as an archive and export it again, import into Mail.

I don't have all the details but a pal rebuilt her mail inbox and has

lurking somewhere on her machine?

Probably.

IMAP or POP account?

Got a time machine or other backup?

There is no such thing - barring random flukes - of a tech support
answer to a vague question, I'm afraid.
