For any interested and just to resolve this thread, wiring the ATV into the router has solved it.
A shame really, as its supposed to be plug and play at its best, but I've read lots on forums where if there are lots of competing router signals in the neighbourhood, then the Apple TV can get confused (which seems odd as my laptop and phone don't?!?!) Anyway, £4 and 20metres of cable later, and it's working fine again.
