it's possible but less likely than in those days (ha! two years ago...). Many of the things exposed in that have been partially or completely rectified but it's still possible.

It's the same old boring advice.

- Have you got a safe back-up? Is there one offsite? (I recommend backblaze and here's the sign-up link that gives me a free month:D)

- Are your passwords secure and unique?

The amount of trouble you take with those two questions is the level of security you will get. Here's the bit few people get so I'm going to shout.

YOU WILL MISS YOUR PHOTOS MORE THAN ANY OF YOUR OTHER FILES INCLUDING ALL THE MONEY!

All those pictures of partner/holiday/children/family/friends/enemies are the most irreplaceable items. People always think 'ah well it's just work documents/email/etc' but photos are what pepole regret losing the most.

More on back-up

- a nearby clone is handy (exact copy) if you have sudden disk failure because the chances are it is close and therefore easy to back-up quickly and frequently -- but if you're burgled/similar, it will be destroyed along with the computer - an online back-up is safe from that kid of problem but will cost you something (thus backblaze)
- A combination of Time Machine and clones is best

Having learned from my and others' experience, my back-up set-up is like this

- clone of start-up drive on one drive
- TM on another drive
- backblaze backup continuously
- all important files on Dropbox

More on passwords

- the more paranoid you get, the better; there's lots of advice out there. - The more 2-step authentication etc you set up, the safer, including from yourself. I am currently still trying to recover my gmail account because I lost Authenticator access when I upgraded my phone (the back-up didn't restore its authenticated status). Be careful, give plenty of information to recover such things.
