I've been using Mailbox as an alternative to the GMail app for both iPhone & iPad and while better I still prefer Apple's Mail app.
I forward all Gmail inbox items to my Mail account so that I use Gmail as a filter and only really need to check the Spam folder for false negatives using Mailbox. Have been happy with this arrangement for several years.
