If you open System Preferences > Audio > Input > click your fingers near the 
keyboard > does it register an input there? If it’s more than one program the 
issue occurs in and you’ve tested a different boot drive, then it’s most likely 
hardware. You could try with a USB headset, makes skyping easier anyway.
