Hi Virginia Set the phone up without restoring from a backup, just like a brand new fresh phone. Go to Settings > General > Software Update > Run the iOS 8.4 update and let the phone restart.
Once that’s done, go to Settings > General > Reset > Erase all content & settings > then when it reboots you can restore from your iPhone 4S backup.
