Another work around if you were on the receiving end of this is that free
icloud accounts let you use the pages numbers and keynote online apps.
With the prevalence of iphones and ipads many windows only people might
actually have an iCloud account already.  If you have received a pages file
on a windows machine and the sender can't or wont convert it you can open
it in the online version of pages and then save it from that as a word or
pdf from that.
