Still unclear whether the local speakers work at all - what happens with 
YouTube? Or is it just iTunes?

I tracked my issue down to those two things. After disconnecting headphones the 
speakers would not play anything, or after disconnecting logme client nothing 
would output from either headphones or speakers. I had to go to the sound 
options and manually pick the right output to use.
