Those programs are always built by the lowest bidder to be included free to
customers. That means they're almost always useless at best, disruptive at
worst.

If you really want AV software then perhaps AVG or Sophos will do, but they
will slow your Mac down.

The best way to stay safe is :

Stay up to date with macOS updates (which include XProtect and rootless SIP)
Make your normal user a non-admin user, with a separate admin account for
installing software
Be careful where you type your password in
Only download updates for 3rd party apps from their websites, one specific
example is Adobe Flash Player. There are a lot of fake flash updates out there
trying to get you to install them
Download and install malwarebytes anti-malware, it's free and very good at
removing adware, also doesn't run in the background and slow your Mac down

Hello Everyone,

I have just changed ISP to TalkTalk from the BT. TalkTalk offer a Mac download
of Supersafe Boost which says it offers protection from viruses, fraud and more.
Up till now I really haven’t felt the need for software of this sort, indeed
the feeling I had from most I had read was that AV generally is a system hog
and as such to be avoided. I know it’s an age old topic but what would you say
about this software in particular and in general?

Best wishes

Steve
