Sam, Did a reinstall and nothing changed. Ran Disk Utility and nothing changed the vm (lower case) file is still there. I had a long ‘chat’ with a senior Apple adviser. After 40 minutes I suggested maybe a Genius appointment would be a better approach she agreed (with gusto!) so I have a Genius appointment for lunchtime. Fingers crossed. Thanks again. Nick
