Wild stab but does it show anything when you open control centre and
look at 'screen mirroring'? It should show viable audio outputs, and it
might be listed (not ideal, I know).
I suspect the Apple adaptor does do quite a lot of work. Teardowns of
the lightning-minijack showed a surprising amount of circuitry.
