Do not dismiss the FB thing too quickly, get the logon details from your 
daughter, get her to show you around the site etc. Then just delete any 
reminders/messages that you receive.  Then there might come a time when you 
need to contact your daughter or her friends and FB may be the only way to 
get hold of her.
If you have a smartphone it is also worth getting on board the Whatsapp 
system thus giving people you know a way of contacting you (or vice versa)

Remember being a member does not imply that you have to partake in the 
process.
