Although I have a FB registration I do not use it for any outgoing
communication, over the years I have found that my social email traffic has
dwindled to a minimal amount as all my contacts across the world have moved
to communicating on FB. As I choose not to use FB for communication my
social emailing has almost disappeared. I have not detected any increase in
spam related emails as a result of my almost dormant FB membership. If
anything I am at a greater risk from Amazon that has by now got a very good
knowledgs of my obsessions and funny ways (Macs and Cameras) and is in a
good position to expose me to the world.

Because FB sends me a notification if any of my FB "friends" sneezes or
goes on holiday or whatever I get an automatic notification that he/she has
sneezed. FB is really trying to tempt me to logon to FB, in the main FB
does not succeed in ensnaring me in unless I suspect that something
significant has occured and on most occasions nothing signficant has
occured.

So my view go ahead and "use FB" - just remember to wear your Marigold
gloves.
