Hmm, might have solved it!? I was running an old but preferred version of Pages (which I didn't think would load at all once I updated) and it seems my Mac was struggling to welcome it aboard High Sierra. I could use it fine, but all was slow.
Have Quit that app and working on same project in new version, whole system is far far happier. Will keep you posted, albeit any other ideas or thoughts welcomed! Have a great weekend everyone.
