that's it, thank you. In the meantime I discovered something I'd not seen before -- the USB wasn't connected properly to the hub. All the lights were on but data wasn't getting through so after reseating it, all seems to be well! (But I'll make a proper note of this for the next upgrade in case it finally gives up)
