There was a time when iCloud (as opposed to iTunes-on-a-mac) didn't save
passwords and so on but perhaps that's redundant now with keychain sync.
I can be more confident about the size of the back-up - it's definitely
incremental so only the first one takes ages.

Hi lovely SMUGgers,
I’ve decided to move almost everything off my MacBook Pro onto my
iPad and use that as my main computer.
One thing that jumped to mind in the process was backups. I’ve
bought a 32GB USB-C drive to back up the On My iPad area but it keeps
failing - probably because that area/folder is too big. This is where
I discovered that, despite huge improvements to Files in iOS 13, Apple
provide no way to find out the size of a folder and its contents on
iPadOS! So I don’t know if the On My iPad folder is too big to fit
on the USB-C drive.
Secondly, I thought that I’d do an iCloud backup and despite reading
all I can find on Apple’s support area about it, it doesn’t tell
me clearly what I want to know so thought I’d see if anyone here
knows: namely:
* When it says it backs up app data, does that mean that it will
backup everything in On My iPad? (I suspect so as it’s the data for
the Files app)
* Once the backup has been made, do subsequent backups only send the
changes since the last backups to iCloud or does it do a complete
backup all over again? (It said it estimated it would take 1 day to
backup!)
Any help appreciated.
Regards,
Stephen
