Sounds like the 2011 model's faulty graphics card issue, could be the VRAM 
which is generating the error. 

There are logic board repair services out there who can resolder a new graphics 
card onto it. The last one I used cost around £200 and I believe the laptop is 
still running, by a company called VAIO Refurbs in Cumbria.
