If you have another Apple device and all the Contacts are there, then the 
problem is with your Apple ID in Catalina. You need to make sure your MacBook 
is logged into your iCloud account (using your Apple ID).

If no other Apple device (iPad, iPhone) then perhaps the above will give you a 
clue as to where your Contacts have gone. They are synced between devices using 
iCould.
