For what it’s worth, I downloaded Mac OS (not the latest Big Sur unfortunately) 
to a 1tb ssd for my 2012 with  3tb fusion drive.  If I can do it anyone can! I 
boot off of the ssd and it works perfectly. Easy to do and worth doing
