aha, thanks Sam. Useful caveats...

You’d need an identical iPhone SE to swap the logicboard (where all
the storage is) but if the issue is with the logicboard, it’ll
present itself on the new phone as well.
Direct connection to the storage on the phone isn’t possible I’m
afraid, it’s all heavily encrypted and soldered onto the logicboard.

Hi folks,
Backstory is complicated but I have my son's phone (SE 2nd edition)
which won't start, charge or recognise a USB connection in any way.
It's slightly bent so wireless charging doesn't work either. We want
to retrieve the data on the phone and suspect it is going to require
physical dissassembly and connecting to the storage directly via
another phone or adaptor.
Is this even viable as a plan? It's our last option now, I think.
(have thoroughly cleaned lightning port, left overnight, different
cables, two different wireless chargers. Only thing not tried is
physically bending it back into shape which seems high risk of doing
further damage so that is the absolute last resort and will probably
require clamps etc I don't have!)
There are no back-ups we know of (I have access to his iCloud and
computer).
Cheers,
Jason
