Having a Time Machine backup is great, you could also do a drive clone using 
Carbon Copy Cloner but a Time Machine backup will suffice.

I’d upgrade straight to Ventura if possible, there’s no need to install Big Sur 
or Monterey. In future it’s definitely recommended to keep up to date with 
macOS upgrades, even if you wait for a .1 or .2 release, Catalina’s quite old 
now.
