There is a very substantial set of changes between 15.04 and 16.04, that make it unlikely there will be a straightforward update process. I would start by building your snaps for the 16.04 VMs that MVO publishes, taking care of the snapcraft changes between 15.04 and 16.04, and then figure out a device reflashing strategy.
