So much for
fair and balanced, eh? From:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Jen -- September 24, 2003
-- REPUBLICANS are fat, uncouth, trigger-happy pigs and
Democrats are tortured, visionary intellectuals. That
about sums up where things stand on "The West Wing" as the Emmy
winner for TV's best drama starts its fifth season tonight - its first without
creator and chief writer Aaron Sorkin. The
season begins where it left off last May - with the beefy, southern Speaker of
the House, Republican Glenallen Walken (John Goodman), taking over as president
in the wake of President Josiah Bartlet's resignation. Bartlet
(Martin Sheen) invoked the 25th Amendment to step aside "temporarily"
because he felt the kidnapping of his daughter - probably by terrorists - would
render him unable to carry out his duties. And,
boy, do his loyal White House elves regret that decision! Rather than help ease
the transition at a very difficult time, Bartlet's staffers go around
bad-mouthing their new Falstaffian president. They
nickname him "Elvis" and roll their eyes at each other when he
expresses a desire to get tough on countries that harbor terrorists. As
if that isn't enough, the new prez allows his pug dog to roam the Oval Office,
leaving press secretary C.J. Cregg (Allison Janney) with dog hair all over her
skirt. Aargh! While
the bulky President Walken strides through the White House with all the finesse
of a bull in a China shop, the saintly, dignified ex (for now)-President
Bartlet remains in the official residence with his wife (Stockard Channing)
stoically awaiting news about their daughter. The
"West Wing's" bias in favor of the Democrats has never been all that
subtle. But in their conception of a Republican president as a coarse, hawkish
thug with a pet dog, the producers of "The West Wing" are signalling
that, this season, the gloves are off. |
