LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Here's why television's system of checks and balances works so much better than anything on the movie side of the industry: When Adam Sandler's Happy Madison Productions perpetrates a cinematic disaster like Dana Carvey's "Master of Disguise" (98 percent "Rotten" over at RottenTomatoes.com), it gets a major theatrical release, but when the company tries a half-baked pilot on television, The WB's says "Thanks, but no thanks." The netlet has pulled Happy Madison's "The Mayor" (previously titled "Kid Mayor") from its midseason slate. The WB had given "The Mayor" a six-episode midseason series order, but according to The Hollywood Reporter, the network wasn't pleased with the creative director of the Adam Sandler/ Jack Giarraputo production. Instead of launching "The Mayor" without any enthusiasm, The WB has made a commitment to a blind put pilot on a different project. "The Mayor," which was written by Adam Resnick and was set to star newcomer Ben Feldman, was to focus on a 19-year-old man who gets elected mayor of a small town in New Hampshire. This is the second midseason effort abandoned by The WB since the netlet announced its midseason plans at the upfronts in May. Earlier, a proposed "Gilmore Girls" spinoff was scrapped after it became clear that the production costs for working on location in Venice, California would have been untenable. Another of the midseason shows mentioned at the upfronts, "One Tree Hill," was moved up to the fall schedule after producer Jerry Bruckheimer expressed reservations about his ability to have the Rachael Leigh Cook drama "Fearless" ready for September.
