Subway mother kept daughter in gym bag

NEW YORK -- Child endangerment charges are pending against a New York City woman for keeping a 2-year-old girl in a zipped-up gym bag, a report said Thursday. Good Samaritans called 911 when they spotted a woman passed out on a staircase in a Harlem subway station Wednesday. The large bag next to her was making noises and moving. Passersby opened the tote and discovered a 2-year-old girl stuffed inside, the New York Daily News reported. The apparently homeless woman in her 40s, whose name was not released, is a recovering heroin addict on methadone who passed out after drinking alcohol, police said. She identified the girl as her daughter but said she did not remember the child's name, the sources said. Both mother and child were taken to Harlem Hospital where doctors said the toddler was in good health.
