Queen now officially larger than life
LONDON -- Back in 1840, the portrait of Queen Victoria fit on the first postage
stamp, but her grandaughter Elizabeth has outdone her in a big way, a report
said Friday. British award-winning artist Jeff Stultiens has produced a
7-foot-8-inch by 5-foot-10 portait of Elizabeth II, the London Sun reported.
The work was commissioned by Oxford University's Oriel College, where it will
hang in the main hall. It shows the queen sitting on a chair in Buckingham
Palace's yellow drawing room, wearing Order of the Garter robes. The badge on
the left of her blue velvet cloak denotes the Garter, Britain's oldest and most
senior order of chivalry.Stultiens, 59, had six sittings with the Queen and
worked on the portrait for six months. "This is a quiet painting in which
I have tried to express her majesty's dignity, authority, good humor and
perception," he said.
