Wow, that's terrible.

Subject: [Sndbox] Who discovered the South Pole?Who discovered the South Pole?
Although using the word "discovered" could be considered miss-placed here (how does one discover something whose location is already well-known and documented?) in this case the term is aptly suited, as the act of journeying to this long sought-after goal is indeed a "discovery" of human nature itself. On December 14, 1911, Roald Amundsen, Sverre Hassel, Helmer Hanssen, Oscar Wisting, Olav Bjaaland, and nineteen dogs became the first living beings to stand at the spot considered to be the South Pole. On March 7, 1912, they announced to the world that they had attained their goal; they had reached the South Pole. However, Amundsen and his crew were not the only ones attempting to reach this goal at the time. Robert Scott's expedition, whose exploits would go down in the annals of exploration as a monument to human striving and tragedy, were also trying to reach the Pole. On January 17, 1912, they reached the very spot where Amundsen's team had already planted a flag. The temperature was 22 below zero. They were cold, tired, hungry, and now they realized they had worked so hard only to be second. "Great God, this is an awful place," Scott wrote in his diary that day. Now they had a 800 miles walk to return to safety. Scott and his team never made it back. They all perished during the long trek from the harsh conditions of the Antarctic. Many months after they had left to begin their journey to the pole, the frozen bodies of Scott and two of his companions were found inside their tent. They only had a few more miles to go to reach safety. The last entry in Scott's diary says, "It seems a pity, but I do not think I can write any more. For God's sake, look after our people."Charles Mims
