DAKAR (AFP) - A Senegalese villager who says he got President Abdoulaye Wade out of a tight spot during his election campaign three years ago published an open letter to the head of state in the press, asking him to "Pay for my tyres."

As Saliou Dieng explains it, two of the tyres on Wade's car blew out as the president was travelling through Tambacounda, 460 kilometers (280 miles) east of Senegal's Atlantic coastal capital, Dakar, campaigning ahead of the March 2000 presidential election.
"I was kind enough to offer him my services, and found him two tyres," said Dieng, adding that Wade promised to send him the money for the tyres as soon as he had returned to Dakar.
Three years down the line, "I have received nothing," Dieng lamented in his letter published on Friday.
"I have written at least 14 letters and sent e-mails to the presidency, to no avail," he said.
Wade was elected to a seven-year term in 2000, putting an end to 40 years uninterrupted rule by the Socialist Party of his predecessor, Abdou Diouf.
