BBC recruiting wanna-be spies for program
LONDON -- The BBC will train eight members of the public to become government spies for a documentary television series, the London Telegraph said Monday. The 10-part series will replicate the recruitment and instruction techniques used by the MI5 and MI6 intelligence services. Successful recruits to "Spy" will relocate to a new city and take on new identities and perhaps even a new spouse during the two-month experiment, the report said. The training program -- a third of the length of the normal security services course and without the usual weapons training -- has been designed by former MI5 and MI6 officers, psychologists and industrial espionage experts. Recruits who perform badly risk being thrown off the program. Tests are likely to include such tasks as emptying a packed shop in five minutes or -- apparently an intelligence service favorite -- the "balcony test," where recruits have to go into an apartment building and be out on a specified balcony within 15 minutes, drinking a glass of water with the owner.
