Napster to sell prepaid cards to buy

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Several companies that sell music online are beginning to offer prepaid cards sold in supermarkets, convenience stores and retailers nationwide. Santa Clara-based Roxio Corp., which bought the Napster name and technology to sell tunes online, said Monday it will start selling prepaid cards at 14,000 electronics stores and other retailers next month throughout the United States, the Los Angeles Times reported. RealNetworks Inc.'s Rhapsody and FullAudio Inc.'s MusicNow also plan to introduce similar prepaid cards but in fewer outlets, the Times said. Mike Bebel, the head of Roxio's Napster division, said the standard method of collecting money from online customers using credit card excludes many teenage customers and scares off adults. The prepaid cards also makes it possible to buy downloads as gifts.
