25 held in Manila cemetery for bladed weapons
Operatives of the Western Police District held 25 people for questioning at Manila North Cemetery because they were found to be in possession of bladed weapons despite a city council directive prohibiting the bringing of lethal weapons to cemeteries.
Chief Supt. Pedro Bulaong, WPD director, questioned the motive behind bringing jungle bolos, switchblades and butcher's knives.
"If the people wanted to remove overgrown grass at the graves of their departed loved ones, they should have done this a week before," Bulaong said.
The police also confiscated a bottle of gin from two cemetery visitors before dawn Friday.
Mayor Joselito Atienza announced recently that law enforcers will conduct baggage inspections and foot patrols to ensure the safety of people visiting the cemeteries.
The security measure, Atienza added, will also focus on
apprehending people who insist on bringing bladed weapons, alcohol and gambling
paraphernalia to the cemeteries.
