SECond looks 11/03/03 THE WEEK THAT WAS: Virginia Tech provides the shock of the season, doing the Hokie Pokie to knock Miami from the ranks of the undefeated. It's the size of victory - 31-7 - that's most stunning of all as the Hurricanes suffer their first Big East loss since 1999. The Rose Bowl picture is a murky mess. Southern California grabs control of the Pac-10 but, in the process, moves a step closer to a BCS championship date in the Sugar Bowl. Michigan leaves the Big Ten in a four-way scramble when it hands Michigan State its first conference loss. Arkansas and Kentucky played each other dead even for 60 minutes, ending regulation in a 24-24 tie. A record-tying seven overtimes and 86 points later, Arkansas escaped Lexington with a 71-63 victory. Defenses rule as North Alabama ruins Valdosta State's day. UNA goes into South Georgia and comes away with a 17-10 upset of Division II's top-ranked team, restoring a little glory to a program that hasn't been the same since Bobby Wallace left for Philadelphia. THE WEEK THAT WILL BE: Eli Manning's coming, with the SEC West front-runners joining him for the trip to the Loveliest Village. Ole Miss has astounded everyone this season while restoring Manning's Heisman candidacy. Auburn's chances of pulling off the upset may well depend on the ability of another quarterback, Jason Campbell, to get the passing game going. It's elimination time in the Big Ten and Pac-10. Michigan State visits Ohio State and Washington State plays host to UCLA. The losers can wave Rose Bowl bids good-bye. Navy has turned in a surprising season, going 6-3 thus far. The Midshipmen can make it a year to remember with a victory Saturday at Notre Dame. The rookies of the Ohio Valley Conference square off in Homewood. Jacksonville State (5-3 overall, 4-1 OVC) is trying to keep pace with co-leader Tennessee State while Samford (6-3, 4-2) still has something to say about the race. GRID TALK: "Bumfuzzled, that's a Southern word that means you don't know what the heck's happening, which I get blamed a lot for nowadays. It's called Alzheimer's." - Bobby Bowden, providing his own Webster's Dictionary definition, after Florida State routs Notre Dame 37-0. Bowden said his team was "bumfuzzled" by the Fighting Irish. "Fire Bowden! Fire Bowden!" - The chant aimed at Clemson coach Tommy Bowden echoing through the stadium in the midst of a 45-17 loss at Wake Forest that left the younger Bowden bumfuzzled. "Once the official goes like this (making the safety signal), that's like trying to win an argument with my wife. When her mind is made up, that's it. You can explain your side and ask forgiveness, but that's it." - South Carolina coach Lou Holtz, who unsuccessfully argued a questionable safety call in a 43-40 loss to Ole Miss. "I wouldn't say it's a curse. I'd say we just outplayed them." - Florida senior Shannon Snell after the Gators outplayed Georgia for the 13th time in 14 years in a 16-13 victory. "If they're not the best team in the country, I'd be shocked ... We played Miami and I just promise you I feel they were better than Miami. I really do." - Louisiana Tech coach Jack Bicknell, after LSU routs his team 49-10. "It's a nice system and all that. One day, maybe I'll get somebody to tell me how it works." - Southern California coach Pete Carroll on the BCS, which is about to elevate his Trojans to No.2 behind only undefeated Oklahoma. THE HEISMAN RACE: 1. QB Jason White / Oklahoma senior: Statistically, he had an off day (12 of 28 for 199 yards and 2 TDs). So what? Oklahoma rolled over Oklahoma State. (Last week: ranked 1st). 2. WR Larry Fitzgerald / Pittsburgh sophomore: Sets an NCAA record with a TD catch in his 14th consecutive game while burning Boston College for 156 yards receiving. (Last week: ranked 2nd.). 3. Eli Manning / Ole Miss senior: Threw for 391 yards and 3 TDs while completing 71 percent of his passes against South Carolina. (Last week: not ranked). 4. QB B.J. Symons / Texas Tech senior: Threw for 399 yards but was picked off five times in a narrow victory over Colorado. (Last week: ranked 3rd). 5. RB Tatum Bell / Oklahoma State senior: His team was pounded, yet he rushed for 122 yards on 22 carries against the Oklahoma defense. (Last week: ranked 4th). TOP TEN: Top Ten home uniforms, with a special assist from News football fashion consultant and Auburn beat reporter Charles Goldberg: 1. Michigan. Those funky helmets and the mix of maize-and-blue have been college football's standard since their inception. 2. Southern California. Great colors and one of the best helmet logos. The 2002 return to the yellow shoulder swath was classic. 3. Notre Dame. What do you get when you combine the shiny gold helmet and pants with the seldom-seen Irish green jersey? Football heaven. 4. Tennessee. It remains a great look, even if this admission might bring us a subpoena from Tommy Gallion. 5. New Mexico State. Never seen m? Trust us. 6. UCLA. Love those distinctive powder blue jerseys. 7. Washington. It's hard to look good in purple, but with the addition of the white shoulder stripes Washington pulls it off quite well. 8. Iowa. Black and gold can be a little dull, but the Hawkeyes are the exception. 9. Troy State. Not only can the Trojans pull off an upset, they look good doing so. 10. Ole Miss. Blue hats, red tops.
