Would-be French king down and out

PARIS -- The man who would have been the king of France today is living far from a regal life and must buy his own bread, the London Telegraph reported Tuesday. Although he bears the title Count of Paris, Henri d'Orleans lives in a three-room apartment on a meager income stemming mostly from his sponsorship of an aftershave and the sale of his watercolors, the report said. So, to make ends meet, d'Orleans published his memoirs, "L'Histoire en Heritage," or "An Inherited History." He tells how he would now be King Henri VII had France not dispensed with its monarchy, and of his father, a keen gambler, who went through one of Europe's great fortunes. D'Orleans describes how his suits are threadbare and he must venture out to purchase his own baguettes each day, barred from the palaces and chateaux lineage had in store for him. His only previous book was a collection of recipes titled, "Terribly Sorry, Highness -- It's My Day Off."
