I had a pet rat many years ago.  THey do make good pets.  They are actually a rather clean animal and territorial.

I had a pet mouse once that lived in a live planter I had in a house.  It stayed in there unless I put my hand in it then it would run up my arm to my neck.

Well, again, not to everyone, Charles.  :-)  Seriously, they're good pets with a little work.  I'd put both mice and rats ahead of guinea pigs, hamsters, or even rabbits.  They're definitely more affectionate than any reptile, and their odor is IMO less of a problem than that of rabbits or any of the mustelids.
