Satellite Signals Used to Control Trucks
SAN
DIEGO (UPI) -- Scientists have reportedly developed a security system allowing
officials to use satellite signals to disable trucks that terrorists might use
as weapons. New Scientist magazine said engineers at Satellite Security
Systems in San Diego recently took less than 40 seconds to bring a truck in
Sacramento, about 530 miles away, to a standstill. They used Motorola's
satellite data transfer network with its network of base stations to beam
instructions to a small transceiver in the truck.
Since the Sept. 11,
2001, attacks, government officials have worried about terrorists using trucks
transporting flammable or hazardous loads to attack buildings, bridges or
other targets. New Scientist said the state of California has already drafted
legislation making "stopping devices" a compulsory addition to all hazardous
vehicles by 2005. The Satellite Security Systems technology, called S3,
involves installing a small transceiver under the dashboard of the vehicle.
This processes instructions sent by satellite and switches off the vehicle's
engine. The demonstration took place at a California Highway Patrol facility
three weeks ago, but was not announced until recently. Since the test, a
50-truck fleet that transports petroleum in California and Nevada has been
fitted with S3 technology.
