Gibson also wants to know how the tabloid got hold of his controversial movie, scheduled for release in February. He's thinking about going to court, his lawyer said.
"Our biggest concern here is that a major media organization would become involved with pirates to concoct a news story to sell newspapers. For someone to feel the license to do this is just outrageous," said Gibson's legal rep George Hedges to the Los Angeles Times.
"The FBI and the U.S. attorney's office would not confirm that an investigation has been launched. But the sources, inside and out of law enforcement, said authorities were looking into how the film was acquired without authorization," the Times reported.
"The flap touches on two of Hollywood's hottest issues: escalating fears of movie piracy, and concerns and curiosity about 'The Passion' itself, in which Gibson has invested more than $20 million of his own money."
The New York Post shared its bootleg copy of the film with five critics. Four of them panned the film, which depicts the last hours of the life of Jesus of Nazareth.
Already, Gibson's movie has become one of the most controversial ever -- and it's still months away from release.
The controversy started when a group of religious scholars obtained a copy of the movie's initial script -- before changes were made. Gibson and his production company believe the script had been stolen.
A spokesman for the Catholic Bishop later acknowledged that use of the script was improper.
