1. NY Times: Hating God Hurts the Democrats

So there we were, sifting through our stacks of newspapers (we read five a day as well as countless news Web sites), when something in the Democrat house organ known as the New York Times caught our eye.

One of the Old Gray Lady's nastiest hatemongers, Nicholas Kristof, amid his usual attacks on all things conservative and moderate, actually had some fascinating news to report. And oh, is it a disaster for him and his fellow Dems.

After making his obligatory mean-spirited attacks on Ann Coulter and Fox News Channel, Kristof gets to the meat way down in his column on the growing clash between the American right (i.e., the majority of citizens) and the American left:

"The most striking cleavage is the God Gulf, and it should terrify the Democrats. Put simply, liberals are becoming more secular at a time when America is becoming increasingly religious, the consequence of a new Great Awakening. Americans, for example, are significantly more likely now than in 1987 to say they 'completely agree' that 'prayer is an important part of my daily life' and that 'we all will be called before God on Judgment Day to answer for our sins,'" he writes.

He notes the recent report by Pew Research Center, which revealed that white Catholics who are actually Catholic (i.e., attend Mass regularly) used to be strongly Democrat but now are more likely to be Republican, and that white evangelicals, split equally between the two major parties only 15 years ago, are now twice as likely to be Republicans.

"Since Americans are three times as likely to believe in the virgin birth of Jesus as in evolution, liberal derision for President Bush's religious beliefs risks marginalizing the left," he frets.

Kristof, despite his own continuing displays of vitriol, frets that the nation must become more civil ... the main reason being that his party is in trouble. "My guess is that if the Democrats stay angry, then they'll offend Southern white guys, with or without pickups and flags, and lose again."

It's about time that liberal Fourth Estate started admitting that more and more Americans are fleeing the Democrat plantation for the GOP not because of greed or racism but because they're fed up with the donkeys' arrogant elitism and animosity toward all things religious. Fortunately for President Bush, only one of the Democrats' White House wannabes that has picked up on this reality is Sen. Joe Lieberman, and there's no way the party will give him the nomination.

2. Bill Clinton's Imitation of Christ

Bill Clinton, in a P.R. stunt to promote his presidential library in his former home state of Arkansas, claimed Friday that one of his favorite books was Thomas A. Kempis' classic "The Imitation of Christ."

Our suggestion: Here's one case where it's definitely best not to accept cheap imitations.

The man from Chappaqua apparently also failed to note the irony of some of the other favorites he mentioned: Thomas Wolfe's "You Can't Go Home Again," Ralph Ellison's "Invisible Man" and the most hilarious of all: Reinhold Niebuhr's "Moral Man and Immoral Society: A Study in Ethics and Politics."

Slick Willie also listed his estranged wife's fake "autobiography," which she calls "Living History" but wags call "Lying Hillary" or "Rewriting History."

It looks as if the Counter-Clinton Library won't have to come up with an alternative reading list for the impeached one. Nothing could top the unintended humor of his picks.

3. P.C. Term for Christmas: 'Golden Sales Period'

At least the atheistic dictators who run China are semi-honest about one thing. They refer to the Christmas season as the "golden sales period."

So reports the Associated Press, in an article about Beijing's attempt to hijack the market for DVDs by promoting an alternative video format.

What, with the increasing attacks on Christmas here in the U.S. we've reported this week, most notably the notorious bigotry demonstrated by New York City's failed government school monopoly, we can see this term catching on in the U.S.

4. Drudge Slams O'Reilly As 'Liar'

Radio listeners will be tuning in to Matt Drudge's Sunday night, rock 'em and sock 'em syndicated national show to see if his slugfest with Bill O'Reilly continues this week.

Last week, Drudge listeners heard Matt take off his gloves against the No Spin Zone guy in a bare-fisted attack.

Drudge charged that O'Reilly was making phony claims about book sales for his latest New York Times bestseller, "Who's Looking Out for You?"

Drudge quoted the Fox newsman as saying that his book has sold more than 900,000 or close to a million copies.

Drudge said O'Reilly was engaging in "lies, damn lies." Citing sales figures from Nielsen's Bookscan numbers, the cyberjournalist said the actual figure was closer to 400,000 plus actual book sales.

He then added, and we're paraphrasing here, that there was a whole lot of spinning and fibbing going on at O'Reilly's No Spin Zone and that it was about time someone exposed the truth about O'Reilly.

In fairness to O'Reilly, the Bookscan numbers do not capture all book sales or the off store sales from book clubs and other channels such as Web sites (including NewsMax). In O'Reilly's case, these sales could be quite substantial.

Drudge finished his radio segment on O'Reilly by playing a tape of the Fox news star on the Imus show, where O'Reilly accused Drudge of having smoked crack and mockingly suggested that Drudge should be killed.

Why so much bad blood between the king of Internet news and the king of cable news?

The answer is somewhat ambiguous.

The public discord between the pair first surfaced when O'Reilly launched his syndicated radio program. At that time Drudge accused O'Reilly of hyping his audience numbers.

Since then the spat between them has continued under the radar screen. Drudge has gently promoted the success of Al Franken's new book, which targets the conservative O'Reilly as public enemy number one.

But with Drudge's latest comments, a full-blown civil war may just be in the offing.

As Drudge might say, this story is "developing..."
