November 24, 2003 -- Despite a host of bad reviews, "Dr. Seuss' The Cat in the Hat" was able to claw its way to the No. 1 spot at the box office over the weekend.

The Post's Megan Lehmann gave "zero stars" to the live-action adaptation of the fabled children's book, but that didn't stop the Mike Myers flick from taking in $40.1 million over its opening weekend.

Also heating up the big screen, Oscar-winner Halle Berry came in second with her ghost story, "Gothika." The thriller scared up $19.6 million, just edging out the $19.1 million earned by last week's champ, "Elf." That Will Ferrell comedy has pulled in close to $100 million in three weeks.

Russell Crowe's "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World" dropped down to fourth place, after a powerful opening last week, taking in a modest $15.2 million.

Also in the top five was Hugh Grant's newest romantic comedy, "Love Actually."

The date movie about the pre-Christmas romantic antics of eight British couples took in $9.1 million.

Rounding out the top 10 were "The Matrix Revolutions," "Brother Bear," "Looney Tunes: Back in Action," "Scary Movie 3," and "Radio."
