Country learns: no rent, no diplomats
NEW YORK -- U.N. diplomats from the West African country of Guinea-Bissau are working from home after being evicted from their New York offices, a newspaper said Friday. A court ordered the doors sealed for non-payment of rent dating back to the mid-1990s, the New York Post said. It is believed to be the first such eviction of a U.N. mission, which, like embassies and consulates, are considered sovereign territory. The building owner, Eastgate Realty, is owed $186,162.04, the newspaper said. Telephone and electrical service has been shut off in the offices for several years for non-payment.
