IMDb Movie of the Day
Woody Allen's love affair with New York reached dizzying -- and musical
-- heights with Everyone Says I Love You, a lighter-than-air confection
that starts off with Edward Norton singing "Just You, Just Me" in
anticipation of popping the question to Drew Barrymore. Barrymore is one
of the offspring of an extremely rich, extremely blended family headed
by Goldie Hawn and Alan Alda, who live a fantasy life out of a '30s
comedy, complete with a stunning penthouse apartment and tons of time to
just, well, sing. Allen made all his cast members sing their own tunes
(except for Barrymore, who begged off saying she was so bad she wouldn't
even sing in the shower), and the soundtrack features great standards
sung by (believe it or not) Julia Roberts (as Allen's age-inappropriate
love interest), Tim Roth (as a recently freed criminal), Natalie Portman
(doing ingenue duty with Gaby Hoffman), and Allen himself. The plot is
gossamer-thin, making room for tunes like "Makin' Whoopee" and "Enjoy
Yourself (It's Later Than You Think)," but by the time Hawn sails
through the air over the Seine to the strains of "I'm Through With
Love," you'll be completely won over and wishing life were a song. -
