THE FOUNDATION

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself." --John Stuart Mill

______----********O********----______
INSIGHT

"I am for doing good to the poor, but I differ in opinion of the means. I think the best way of doing good to the poor, is not making them easy in poverty, but leading or driving them out of it. In my youth I traveled much, and I observed in different countries, that the more public provisions were made for the poor, the less they provided for themselves, and of course became poorer. And, on the contrary, the less was done for them, the more they did for themselves, and became richer." --Benjamin Franklin

______----********O********----______
ICTUS IMPRIMIS

"The greatest proof of Christianity for others is not how far a man can logically analyze his reasons for believing, but how far in practice he will stake his life on his belief." --T. S. Eliot

______----********O********----______
FAMILY

"The presumption in America today -- first for the poor, but increasingly for all of us -- is that our children belong to the state. The state allows those children to remain 'out on loan' to their natural birth parents only so long as you meet all the government's requirements: Every vaccination recommended by the major pharmaceutical firms, no matter how dangerous or statistically useless. No guns in the house; no strange faith-healing religious beliefs. And you'd better make sure your kid reports to the local government youth propaganda camp from the age of 6 ... or is it 5 now? ... so the local educrats get their subsidies based on a full complement of little butts to warm the seats." --Vin Suprynowicz

______----********O********----______
CULTURE

"We have failed our children if we have not passed on to them a realistic perspective of government. We must insure that they know that it is not okay to raid people’s paychecks and steal their property, even if doing so seems to be in the best interest of society. We must not take it for granted that our children know the importance of spiritual things and understand the foundations of traditional morality. We must insure that they do. Walt Disney would not know the company he founded only a generation ago. He would roll over in his grave at what those at the helm of Disney today have made of his dream. Henry Ford would turn away in disgust at what the Ford Foundation is doing with his fortune. I am certain that the Founding Fathers would be distressed at the way we have allowed their carefully constructed, much debated words...twisted so as to kick God and the Bible out of our schools and to protect the purveyors of obscenity. They would wonder in disbelief at the income taxes we allow to be confiscated from our paychecks today and the property that is stolen without compensation by means of egregious land use regulations. In their day, they would have hung the government official who told them that they could not build a deck on the back of their house without a government permit or could not own a gun without the government’s consent.... Today, 'church going' Walt [Disney] would not even be welcome to sit on the board of directors of his own company. Today, neither George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, nor James Madison could be elected to Congress in any of the states from which they hailed two centuries ago. That’s what happens when a generation or two fails to pass on to their children and those who work under them the values and traditions that form the very underpinnings of their society. Precious things slip away, for the price of liberty really is eternal vigilance." --Bill Sizemore

LIBERTY

"I can't think of a finer group of folks to have Thanksgiving dinner with than you all. We're proud of you. Today, Americans are gathering with their loved ones to give thanks for the many blessings in our lives. And this year we are especially thankful for the courage and the sacrifice of those who defend us, the men and women of the United States military. I bring a message on behalf of America: we thank you for your service, we're proud of you, and America stands solidly behind you. Together, you and I have taken an oath to defend our country. You're honoring that oath. The United States military is doing a fantastic job. You are defeating the terrorists here in Iraq, so that we don't have to face them in our own country. You're defeating Saddam's henchmen, so that the people of Iraq can live in peace and freedom. By helping the Iraqi people become free, you're helping change a troubled and violent part of the world. By helping to build a peaceful and democratic country in the heart of the Middle East, you are defending the American people from danger and we are grateful." --Commander-in-Chief George W. Bush in a surprise visit to our troops in Baghdad Thanksgiving day. (For the complete text of the President's comments, link to -- http://Federalist.com/news/Bush_thanks.asp )

OPINION IN BRIEF

"For decades, or even a century, we've been hearing a host of propositions from liberals. Crime and violence are symptoms of poverty. The United States must do more than simply drop bombs; it must alleviate the 'root causes' of terrorism, hopelessness, etc. America must be internationally oriented, looking to engage the world and help the unfortunate. It is in America's vital interests to come to the aid of the downtrodden. And, most recently and relevantly, America must get into the business of nation building. All of this has been defenestrated by a Democratic [sic] party leadership that no longer spouts its Clinton-era mantra that partisanship should end at the water's edge. Instead,...even as we are fighting a guerilla battle where the enemy defines victory not in military terms but in its ability to weaken American resolve at home, Democrats are crassly undermining the safety of our troops, the credibility of our nation and the integrity of their own political philosophy by giving the terrorists precisely the victories they crave." --Jonah Goldberg

______----********O********----______
GOVERNMENT

"On Jan. 23, 1996, Bill Clinton told the nation, 'The era of big government is over.' If so, it sure didn't last very long. Today, the era of big government is back with a vengeance, ushered in by a massive new prescription drug entitlement, a pork-laden energy bill of grotesque proportions and a trade war with China. What few people, including myself, ever thought would happen was that this new era of big government would be implemented by Republicans controlling both Congress and the White House. It makes me long for the good old days of gridlock." --Bruce Bartlett

RE: THE LEFT

"In addition to having a number of family deaths among them, the Democrats' other big idea -- too nuanced for a bumper sticker -- is that many of them have Jewish ancestry. There's Joe Lieberman: Always Jewish. Wesley Clark: Found Out His Father Was Jewish in College. John Kerry: Jewish Since He Began Presidential Fund-Raising. Howard Dean: Married to a Jew. Al Sharpton: Circumcised. Even Hillary Clinton claimed to have unearthed some evidence that she was a Jew -- along with the long lost evidence that she was a Yankees fan. And that, boys and girls, is how the Jews survived thousands of years of persecution: by being susceptible to pandering. Clark said that when he discovered he was half-Jewish, he remembered growing up in Arkansas and feeling 'a certain kinship' with Jewish families in the dry-goods business. (I, too, have always felt a certain kinship with Calvin Trillin.) The Democrats' urge to assert a Jewish heritage is designed to disguise the fact that the Democrats would allow the state of Israel to perish as Palestinian suicide bombers slaughter Jewish women and children. Their humble-origins claptrap is designed to disguise the fact that liberals think ordinary people are racist scum. Their perverse desire to discuss the deaths and near-deaths of their children is designed to disguise the fact that they support the killing of more than a million unborn children every year. (Oh, by the way, what did their milkman and millworker fathers think about abortion?) If the Democrats start extolling you -- get a gun." --Ann Coulter

POLITICAL FUTURES

"How to understand the failure of the conservative movement in America? And it most certainly is a failure.... We can look at the symptoms of our defeat: our constitution has been overthrown, our public schools are government propaganda centers, our colleges are bastions of political correctness and no longer teach logical thought processes, we are constantly waging aggressive war, we have presided over the destruction of the black community, and the complete degradation of our moral framework. Have we not failed? What remains? Yeah, those are some pretty scary symptoms all right. So how are conservatives to blame? Aren't we the ones who believe in truth, justice and the American way? Yet here we are, living in a country that murders its own children and where the morals and beliefs of our fathers have been throw into the gutter of history. Were we asleep? How did we allow this?" --Michael Peirce

FOR THE RECORD

"The just concluded (thankfully) Congress is an embarrassment to itself and everyone who favors smaller government. This Republican Congress, in addition to increasing spending on entitlements and expanding big government - like the Democrats they once criticized - also dished out $95 billion in tax breaks and pork-barrel projects. The Heritage Foundation's Brian M. Riedl says mandatory government spending will reach 11.1 percent of GDP this year, a record high, and non-defense discretionary spending in 2003 will amount to 3.9 percent of GDP for the first time since 1985. Riedl also predicts taxes will inevitably have to be raised to pay for it all. What politician wants to be demagogued about cutting 'essential services'? The Republican "oath" says, 'I believe that the proper function of government is to do for the people those things that have to be done but cannot be done, or cannot be done as well, by individuals, and that the most effective government is government closest to the people.' Would some lawyer please sue the Republican National Committee for violating truth-in-labeling laws?" --Cal Thomas

"Re DOD Recruiting at Law Schools, As noted in Federalist No. 03-42, a recently filed law suit is seeking to stop DOD JAG recruiting at law schools -- particularly Yale. (Based on 'Sexual Preference Discrimination' aka: 'Don't Ask Don't Tell') I guess the professors filing suit have never read ABA Model Rules 1.8 (j). As a JAG officer explained to me, 'even the Bar discriminates and regulates who you can sleep with...why pick on DOD recruiters'."

"From the front: Security was tight over the Thanksgiving holiday as first President Bush and then former First Lady Hillary Clinton visited Iraq. The extra security was deemed necessary to protect President Bush from terrorists and Senator Clinton from the troops."

"This past weekend two U.S. soldiers were pulled out of a civilian car in Iraq and murdered. It's time to let LTC West get back to work. Our soldiers need him!"

"In Novelist Frederick Forsyth's open letter to George W. Bush, he states that the British left hates America first, Britain second. Wow. That makes the British Left more patriotic to their country than the American Left is to ours. The American Left hates the U.S.A. best of all!"

THE LAST WORD

"To put blind faith in government is as stupid as putting blind faith in what a used-car salesman tells you. It is also un-American. In our great country, sovereignty rests with the people, and the proper attitude of a citizen toward government at all levels is courteous skepticism. Elected officials and bureaucrats are your servants, not your masters." --Charley Reese
