Not argue, discuss. :) I can go along with your thoughts here. It is quite possibly a difference in degrees and/or shades of meaning. I might would even say I pity him, because it is such a horrible place to be in.
But I don't necessarily feel sorry for him, because he chose to do what he did. More than pitying him, I am saddened by the circumstances.
