"Battlestar Galactica" Premieres Monday, December 8th, at 9/8c on the
Sci Fi Channel
The Sci Fi Channel's new miniseries, "Battlestar Galactica", premieres
Monday, December 8th, 9/8c. A complete reimagining of the late '70s
television show, "Battlestar Galactica" stars Edward James Olmos as
Commander Adama, the leader of a rag-tag fleet of ships carrying all
that remains of humanity. Everyone else was wiped out by the Cylons, a
lifeform that turned on its creator. Now, the survivors "jump into
uncharted space...limited supplies...no allies" at war with an
unbeatable (and sometimes alluring) foe. The miniseries debuts Monday,
December 8th at 9/8c on the Sci Fi Channel.

IMDb MOVIE OF THE DAY
In recent years, film versions of Jane Austen novels have become all the
rage, usually overlaid with a slight glossiness and playful archness
that served to give the films a safe feeling, even in the storylines'
darkest moments. Not so with Patricia Rozema's 1999 adaptation of
Mansfield Park, which instead gives the viewer a grittier, more grounded
view of the time in which the characters lived, a technique which is not
wholly faithful to the book but is a fascinating exploration
nonetheless. One of Austen's most challenging stories, Mansfield Park
centers on Fanny Price (Frances O' Connor), who as a young girl was born
into poverty but is brought to live with her wealthy relations (Lindsay
Duncan and Harold Pinter) as an act of ill-founded charity. Rozema's
Fanny is strong-willed, a mix of Austen's creation and Austen herself -
still completely subject to the whims of her adoptive family while
maintaining creativity (she's a writer here) and spirit (witty
conversations with her beloved cousin Edmund, played by Jonny Lee
Miller), with a strong sense for what is right without judging others
too harshly. What makes this adaptation stand out is the stark reality
of the world surrounding Fanny - a grand but rather spare estate that is
maintained on money from slave labor; the utter filth of Fanny's
impoverished parents' home; the always present and frightening threat of
poverty facing young women if they don't marry well. Especially
noteworthy is the performance of Alessando Nivola, who for the first
time, plays suitor Henry Crawford in an uncartoon-like, sincere manner,
so that Fanny must take him and his attempts at courtship quite
seriously, all the while struggling with her love for another. - Heather
