The plot of Dimension Films' modest-budget "Bad Santa" may be a stinker to some parents and critics, but it's been a bombshell at the box office, even capturing the No. 1 spot Monday night.
The flick - featuring a gamey, grouchy, no-good Billy Bob Thornton as a criminal Claus - raked in $863,410 Monday. Add that hefty figure to the $16.8 million the movie earned for its first five days starting last Wednesday, and Dimension execs should be gearing up for a decent Christmas bonus themselves.
"We hoped it would do this - we're thrilled," one employee said yesterday.
"People were looking for the alternative Christmas movie, and funny always works," an industry expert said.
"This movie's outrageous. . . . It's 'A Wonderful Life' meets 'South Park.' Sometimes parents just want to leave the kids at home and go see a movie."
The R-rated film has taken heat in some camps because of its black humor.
But Dimension, a division of Miramax, is laughing all the way to the bank as it topped even the much glossier movies like "The Haunted Mansion" and "The Cat in the Hat" at least for a day.
The movie cost a relatively modest $23 million to produce, a company executive said.
