Where does the term "hogwash" come from?

If somebody says something which is patently false or untrue, you're liable to to say that it's hogwash. The term comes from the fact that what a pig does that resembles washing doesn't actually leave them very clean. The simple fact is that Pigs are not particularly clean animals. They live in their own feces, sleeping in it, rolling in it, and playing in it. They also don't sweat. When they want to cool off they urinate to create mud and then lay down in it - not particularly sanitary by our standards, but certainly effective. Natutrally, if one were to give a hog a bath, what would be left when you were done (the "hog wash") would be nothing water and feces - a false bath if ever there was one. Hench the term "hogwash" for anything which isn't what it's said to be.
